Allergic rhinitis in children
What is allergic rhinitis?
Allergic rhinitis is an allergic condition involving the nose. It can be associated with an allergy of the eyes (allergic conjunctivitis). It is caused when an allergic individual is exposed to an allergen to which he is sensitive. This causes release of chemicals leading to irritation of the eyes, nose, sinuses and throat leading to symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
What are the common causes?
The common allergens include house dust mite, pollen, pet allergens and mould spores. Depending upon the cause, the symptoms could be seen only during a season or throughout the year.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of allergic rhinitis include runny nose, blocked nose, mouth breathing, sneezing, itchy nose and eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis causes symptoms of redness, itching, burning sensation and watering of the eyes.

The condition is diagnosed from the history and examination findings. Individual allergens that are identified from the history could be confirmed by allergy testing including skin prick tests and blood tests.
How is it treated?
Avoidance of the allergen could prevent the onset of allergic reactions. Anti-allergy medications can be used to reduce the symptoms. They can be taken through the mouth, topical drops or sprays. If symptoms are frequent or severe, preventive medications can be given to prevent the allergic reaction from taking place when exposed to the allergen.
